The Sun has reported how Downing Street was yesterday forced to deny claims that Ken Clarke’s Ministry of Justice will be axed in a shake-up.

The PM’s spokesman said there were “no plans” to close the Justice Secretary’s department.

Senior Ministers are worried Mr Clarke’s soft-touch policies are wrecking the Tories’ reputation on law and order. Reports had yesterday claimed Downing Street wanted to scrap the Ministry of Justice and put the Home Office back in charge of prisons and sentencing.

David Cameron’s officials were also said to be looking at creating a new department to deal with immigration, citizenship and passports.

But the PM’s spokesman flatly denied it, saying: “We are not planning machinery of Government announcements.”
